BATH (Avon) - Beckford’s Tower and Grave

Information

The 130ft high tower was built in 1827 and offered Beckford a view of his old home at Fonthill Abbey.  Beckford was thought to be the richest commoner in England. Beckford & Goodridge (builder) are buried in the cemetery.  Beckford is on a mound ,Saxon style, not underground. The railings beside the gateway were originally around Beckford's tomb when it was in Bath. He was moved to the cemetery beside the tower when it was consecrated after his death.

The tower and adjoining building where lavishly decorated. Only a small part of the décor survives. This is at the top of the tower.

The Tower is sometimes open to the public.
