The building on the village green next to the sign that says “Stamfordham Welcomes
You” was the village Lock-up. It pre-dates the formation of the Police Force. Any
miscreants, often suffering from the effects of too much Ale, would be put in the
Lock-up overnight. There are no windows, just slits for ventilation and at the most
a stone slab to lie on. It has been said that this is the origin of the saying “stone
cold sober” as they probably would be sober after spending a cold night lying on
the stone. The house in the background of the picture below used to be the Police
house, but not until after the days of the Lock-up.
