WHITGIFT (Humberside) - Strange Clock

Information

The church of St. Mary Magdalene has an unusual clock. It has 13 o'clock instead of 12 o'clock. In the 1990s I asked the vicar if it was because some superstition. He said that it was not because of any superstition and that there were two explanations. The one that some locals liked to tell is that when the clock was being refurbished, the sign writer who was re-painting the numerals liked to go to the pub opposite the church at lunch time. One day he had too much ale and got the numbers wrong. The vicar thought it more likely the painter had made a mistake with the spacing and part of the previous marking had shown through so he painted it in and hoped no one would notice.
